Spring CIO Forum Showcases AMA’s CEO, Entrepreneur, Design Thinking Expert and Digital Innovators

ANN ARBOR, MI, Feb. 4, 2020 – One day, four sessions, six speakers and infinite impact. The 2020 CHIME-HIMSS CIO Forum will take digital healthcare executives on an educational journey that will prepare them to lead change through innovation. Hosted by the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) in conjunction with the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), the spring forum will feature three keynote speakers and three CHIME members who will share real-life experiences as healthcare innovators.

They are:
  • Opening keynote speaker James L. Madara, MD, CEO and executive vice president of the American Medical Association, describing the coming challenges on the healthcare horizon
  • Midmorning keynote speaker Robin Farmanfarmaian, an entrepreneur and angel investor, focusing on cutting-edge healthcare and biotech companies that are poised to impact 100 million patients
  • Midafternoon keynotes through “Innovation beyond the Edge,” real-world examples presented by CHIME members who brought advanced technology to health and care. Presenters are Marc Probst, vice president and CIO at Intermountain Healthcare; Natalie Pageler, MD, CMIO at Stanford Children’s Health; and Daniel Barchi, senior vice president and CIO at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital
  • Closing keynote speaker John K. Coyle, Olympian, founder of The Art of Really Living and a world-leading expert in innovation and Design Thinking, talking about optimizing strengths, building resiliency and fostering innovation

“Each speaker brings a unique story that connects with others to paint a complete picture of our current healthcare landscape as well as what is on the horizon and how we can respond to transform health and care,” said Tim Stettheimer, CHIME’s vice president of education. “Dr. Madara will set the stage with an overview of the healthcare landscape, followed by Robin Farmanfarmaian, an entrepreneur whose personal healthcare experiences have led her to invest in and grow tech companies that empower patients. The afternoon starts with an exciting new program, Innovation beyond the Edge, with three of our most innovative members describing how they applied advanced technologies in their health systems. We close with John Coyle, who will share how Design Thinking helped him win an Olympic medal and Design Thinking strategies digital executives can use to lead change.”

Madara took the reins at the AMA in 2011 and has helped sculpt the organization’s visionary long-term strategic plan. In addition to that role, he is an adjunct professor of pathology at Northwestern University and chairman of the innovation firm Health2047 Inc.

Farmanfarmaian is currently the CEO and co-founder of ArO, a dynamic vision correction and eye health monitoring company. Recent investments include Invicta Medical, a medical technology company for sleep apnea, and Dance Biopharm, inhaled insulin with a smart, connected device. Her books include The Patient as CEO: How Technology Empowers the Healthcare Consumer (2015) and The Thought Leader Formula: Strategically Leverage Your Expertise to Drive Business & Career Goals (2019).

Coyle is an Olympic speedskating silver medalist and the best-selling author of Design for Strengths: Applying Design Thinking to Individual and Team Strengths (2018) and The Art of Really Living Manifesto (2016). A graduate of Stanford University’s Product Design Program, he is an NBC sports analyst, two-time TEDx presenter and teaches innovation classes at Northwestern, Marquette and CEDIM University Graduate School in Mexico.

Innovation beyond the Edge was inspired by the successful fall forum program, Leadership from the Edge, which features TED-like presentations by CHIME members who are pushing the envelope in health and care. Innovation beyond the Edge will showcase real-world examples of digital transformation, providing a roadmap for healthcare executives to drive innovation in their organizations.

The 2020 CHIME-HIMSS CIO Forum will take place March 8-9 in Orlando, Fla. It will open with a reception on March 8 and a full-day educational program on March 9. More information is available here.
