CHIME and PatientPing Collaborate to Educate CHIME Membership About CMS’s New Patient Access and Interoperability Rule

Condition of Participation Requires Hospitals Share E-notifications by September 2020

ANN ARBOR, MI, March 25, 2020 – PatientPing, a national care collaboration platform, and the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) today announced a collaboration to inform CHIME’s membership and the digital healthcare community of the new e-notifications condition of participation (CoP). As outlined in federal rules released by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on March 9, the new CoP will require hospitals to send e-notifications when patients have emergency department visits as well as when inpatient admission, discharge, and transfer events occur. The goal of the new CoP is to encourage information sharing and increase coordination across the care continuum to improve patient outcomes and lower costs.

“These are trying times for clinical and non-clinical health professionals. They are confronting the COVID-19 pandemic and preparing for new guidelines published by CMS and the ONC,” said Jay Desai, CEO of PatientPing. “We believe that CMS’s Condition of Participation for electronic notifications will meaningfully accelerate improvements in care coordination across the nation. We are excited to share our expertise with the CHIME community to help ensure its members meet the aggressive compliance deadline.”

CHIME members will receive educational programming co-hosted by CHIME and PatientPing, including an initial webinar detailing the immediate impacts of the rule with a focus on portions specific to the CoP. The webinar, Washington Debrief – New E-notifications Condition of Participation from CMS, is scheduled for noon EST Friday, March 27. The webinar will help hospital CIOs navigate the new CoP compliance requirements within the September 2020 deadline.

“Our members are tasked with implementing a number of new policies in companion rules released by CMS and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT,” said Russell Branzell, CHIME President and CEO. “CHIME is committed to providing every resource available to help them meet these rules and give patients the best possible care across the care continuum.”
