The SC HIMSS Programs Committee is pleased to announce the March event, a webinar on Virtual Health and the Role of Public Policy, on March 24, 2021 from 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. EST. During this hour discussion, Brooke Yeager-McSwain will interview Dr. Nick Patel. SC HIMSS Board members will share their background, experience, and current involvement in health informatics as well as involvement in SC HIMSS and HIMSS. This online event offers a great time to network and interact with the SC HIMSS Board members.
Brooke Yeager McSwain, M.Sc., M.A., RRT, is the HIMSS Foundation Policy Fellow & has served as the Health Policy Lead for the SPROUT CTSA/NCATS national telehealth research collaborative, an NIH funded organization, since 2017. She has over 20 years of clinical experience, including working as an advanced critical care therapist in the Cardiothoracic ICU at MUSC, & as the coordinator for MUSC’s LVAD and heart and lung transplant rehabilitation program.
She earned her B.Sc. from the University of South Carolina in Exercise Science and Biomechanics, an M.Sc. from Northeastern University in Clinical Respiratory Therapy and Organizational Communications, and an M.A. from The Johns Hopkins University in Government and Political Communications.
Dr. Patel serves as the Chief Digital Officer at Prisma Health and Vice Chair for Innovation & Clinical Affairs at Department of Medicine in South Carolina. Also, he has practiced as an internal medicine physician for the past sixteen years. Dr. Patel helps lead the digital health team in technology strategy and implementation, and leads projects to bring virtual reality and 3D printing utilization into care delivery. He has given multiple presentations around the country ranging in topics from Healthcare IT transformation, governance, workflow enhancements, health equity, telehealth, AI, and population health. Additionally, Dr. Patel spearheaded the largest, first-of-its-kind Microsoft Surface pilot in the nation to improve physician workflow, published in the International Journal of Medical Informatics as well as played an instrumental role in the acquisition of over $24 million of venture capital funding for healthcare start-up companies. Previously as the medical group’s CMIO, he co-led efforts in the optimization and integration the system’s EHR. Recognized as a leader in defining and articulating a unique vision on the utilization and development of technology in healthcare.
Due to his industry contributions, Dr. Patel currently serves on multiple healthcare advisory boards including HP Inc., University of South Carolina College of Engineering and Computer Science, Kyruus, Conversa, Perfect Serve, and Fraunhofer USA. He is a subject matter expert for multiple Fortune 500 tech companies, such as Hewlett-Packard, and Microsoft, and has served as principal investigator on multiple IRB approved IT studies in conjunction with UofSC. Dr. Patel holds a clinical faculty position at the UofSC School of Medicine and School of Engineering and Computing. He is also one of two physicians in the world who have been awarded Microsoft’s Most Valuable Professional Award. Also recently named Top 20 Chief Digital Officers to know in 2020 by Becker’s Hospital Review.
